How to Plan the Perfect Kids' Party

A stress-free guide from the Hooray HQ team

Pastel daisy balloon backdrop for a kids' birthday party

Planning a kids' party can feel like a lot — but it doesn't have to be. With a simple plan and a few statement touches, you can throw a celebration the birthday boy or girl will talk about for weeks (we've seen it happen). Here's how we'd approach it.

1. Start with a theme (4–6 weeks out)

A theme makes every other decision easier — colours, cake, games, and decorations all flow from it. Ask your little one what they're into right now: dinosaurs, mermaids, a favourite colour, space, sports. You don't need to go overboard; even a strong two- or three-colour palette reads as "themed" once the balloons are up.

2. Lock in the date, time & guest list (3–4 weeks out)

3. Plan the space & the "wow" moment (2–3 weeks out)

Every great party has one spot that makes kids go "wow" as they walk in — usually a backdrop behind the cake or party table. This is where balloons do the heavy lifting. A balloon garland or freestanding arch in your theme colours instantly lifts the whole room, and doubles as the perfect photo spot.

Short on time? Our Grab & Go range lets you pick your colours and collect a ready-made garland, column, or arch. Want it fully styled and installed? Our Custom & Themed service brings the whole look to life and sets it up for you.

4. Sort food & activities (1–2 weeks out)

5. The day before

Prep food, charge your camera, and set up your backdrop and balloons so the morning is calm. If we're installing for you, we'll handle this part — you just show up and enjoy it.

The easy bit: the balloons

Whatever you're planning, we'll make the styling the easiest part of the day. Browse our Grab & Go range or request a custom quote — and let's make their day one worth HOORAY-ing about.
